Roman A Clef

A roman à clef (French for "novel with a key") is a novel in which real-life people, events, or experiences are depicted through fictional characters or settings. The "key" refers to the fact that, while the story appears fictional, it can be "unlocked" or interpreted to reveal the true identities of people or events being described. This allows authors to explore controversial or sensitive topics, often political or personal, while offering some protection through the veil of fiction.
